Vet Cookbook arrives just in time for Christmas!
After coming home from another long and busy day at the veterinary hospital I was elated to see that my order of the Vet Cookbook had arrived.
Many of you know that I work in busy hospital in Western Sydney. Our hospital tends to be busy all year round but even for us we know it kicks up a notch coming into December - January. I have felt myself succumbing to the day to day pressures of being a vet, general manager, mum, wife and friend. So the Vet Cookbook arrived in perfect timing.
The Vet Cookbook is the brainchild of Drs Anne Fawcett and Deepa Gopinath, and vet nurses Asti May and Jenna Moss-Davis. They have ignited the veterinary community in coming together to share stories, recipes and tips in the hope of improving the mental health crisis that the veterinary profession faces. And in taking it one step further, all of the proceeds from the sale of the Vet Cookbook will be used to produce and deliver mental health resources designed specifically for the veterinary profession.
This morning I took some time to flick through the cookbook, reading stories of fellow vets and nurses. Discovering their struggles and triumphs. Finding out their coping strategies and thinking of ways that I can integrate them into my self help toolkit.
I have been humbled that Dr Anne asked me write a piece for the book - never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that something I wrote would be published in a cookbook. For those of you who know me, know that my amazing husband does nearly all of the cooking in our house.
I shared a story about resilience pie - which was part of a speech I made to the Sydney University Veterinary Students at their awards night earlier this year. It is one of my recipes for being kind to yourself.
I feel lucky to be in the book alongside so many of my veterinary role models. To get your hands on a copy visit http://www.cve.edu.au/vet-cookbook
Even though cooking is not my strong suit there are plenty of recipes that I can't wait to try out on my family and also my colleagues! Watch this space.
